Carvell putts his way into field at Humewood

Matthew Carvell took advantage of a hot putter to head the list of 10 qualifiers into this week's Vodacom Business Origins of Golf event at Humewood Golf Club.

His three-under-par 69 headed the field, with PH McIntyre next best on 70, and four players – Derik Ferreira, Darren Blair, Johan du Buisson and Danie van Niekerk Jnr – were the only others to break par with their 71s.

Five players were tied on 72 for seventh place, which meant they had to play off for the final four spots.

That turned out to be a marathon, after England's Richard Kemp, Michael Dreyer and Francois van Vuuren secured their spots in short order with pars on the first playoff hole.

Then the two players who had dropped a shot on that first playoff hole, Alpheus Kelapile and Ivan van Onselen, battled through six holes before Van Onselen won through.

There were no such problems for Carvell, however, as he took advantage of an early tee-off to get through most of his round before the wind picked up enough to be a problem.

"I putted really well," he said as he looked forward to playing his seventh event on the Sunshine Tour since turning professional, and in his first Vodacom Business Origins of Golf event. "I simply stayed out of the rough, and that's the key to playing this course."

His best result was a share of 21st in the Telkom PGA Championship.

In our weekly breakdown of the field, we take a look at how the players stack up in terms of position on the Order of Merit, world rankings, recent wins and age.
